Herkimer Diamond Mines
The world-famous Herkimer Diamonds are beautiful double-terminated
quartz crystals already faceted by nature. The bedrock in which
the crystals are found began forming approximately half a billion
years ago in the shallow Cambrian-age sea that lapped against
the shores of the ancestral Adirondack Mountains. They were first
discovered by the Mohawk and Iroquois Indians. Evidence has been
found of their using the crystals as tools and weaponry. Some
authorities believe that the Mohawk were known in their own language
as the people of their crystals because of this.
Herkimer Diamonds make attractive cabinet specimens, either in
groups of loose crystals, single or in a matrix, all just as they
come from the ground. The most perfect crystals are often used
as display pieces in jewelry.
Herkimer Diamond Mines in Herkimer County has been open to the
public for generations to allow prospectors to dig for their own
diamonds. Afterwards, you can visit Central New York's largest
jewelry store, an extensive Rock & Gem Museum, and award-winning
KOA Kampground, and the Crystal Chandelier Restaurant, all on
site.
