Gansevoort House Books & Galleries
Linda and Oscar Stivala combine innkeeping, Oscar's art gallery,
Linda's piano studio and book business. They welcome guests, prepare
and serve breakfast and discuss the history of the house as well
as the region, the art, the music and books at the inn and at
Canal Place and Main Street, Little Falls and at Gems Along the
Mohawk Books, art and reservations are available online: www.thebookfinderbandb.com
The Gansevoort House is an example of the architectural treasures
in their best selling book, The Erie Canal Legacy; Architectural
Treasures of New York. It is a wonderful place to welcome overnight
travelers to Little Falls as an elegant showcase for the paintings
by Oscar Stivala and Linda's bookstore, i.e., cookbooks in the
kitchen, gardening books in the solarium and history books around
the fireplace, travel books in the guest rooms et cetera. The
music salon is ideal for Linda to teach piano lessons and for
parlor music events both jazz and classical.
The 18 room wood-frame house was built in 1889 during the hey-day
of the Little Falls Mercantile Era. A wrap-around porch welcomes
guest at the entrance. Just inside the door there are Ionic columns
which introduce the three living salons, two of which are music
rooms and one has a fireplace. The formal dining room has French
leaded glass doors which lead to the solarium where guests enjoy
a breakfast of the freshest fruits in season omelettes with herbs
from the garden, home baked muffins, and coffee or tea. Just outside,
below the deck surrounded by trees is a landscaped sitting area
in the garden. Three guest rooms and a guest suite in the Carriage
House are available for overnight lodging and breakfast.
A companion book for a self-guided walking tour of along Gansevoort
Street is available. Examples of the different styles architecture
treasures of the Empire State photographed for book, Erie Canal
Legacy, can be seen along this tour. Guests will find the Gansevoort
House Galleries around the corner and after breakfast your host
and hostess will open the gallery for guests to visit. At Canal
Place there are antique shops, art galleries and fine dining.
A picnic is available for inn guests at Benton Landing, before
boarding the Erie Canal Boat for a 1 hour cruise included in the
Canal Celebration package.
